The Zine Project
Learning from AuthorsWhile reading The One and Only Ivan and Because of Winn Dixie, we looked carefully at how the stories were written. Students applied their learning to their book club books and discussed elements of the stories in their clubs. This work was guided by Lucy Calkins' Character Studies unit.
Writing PartnersThroughout the writing process, students worked with a writing partner to practice storytelling, grow ideas and get feedback.
Character and Story DevelopmentIn the beginning phase of the writing process, students got to know their character and imagined problems they might have. Before writing the full story, students planned out their story arc.
Playing ScenesTo develop scene ideas, students created miniature versions of their characters and practiced the scene a few times with their partner in student-created settings.
Acting ScenesA few students also directed scenes with the help of a group of actors. The actors helped bring the scenes to life, and the directors got a better idea of what they really wanted to happen in the scene and how to show it.
EditingStudents learned a great deal about writing conventions, in particular about how to make paragraphs and punctuating dialogue. The final phase in the writing process was to check their own work and their classmates' work to make final edits and get it ready to publish.
